If you haven't been with us for the rest of this series, you can find the rest of it under the Home Management label.
I know many homemakers struggle with keeping on top of their laundry so as part of this little series, I wanted to share what works for me.
::Keep our wardrobes simple. Ben and I do not have a ton of clothes. I have 5-6 shirts that I wear most days, along with t-shirts for sleeping in, and undershirts. I wear a denim skirt almost every day, though I do have other skirts I mix things up with from time to time (and nicer ones for Sundays). The children have more clothes because they're messier, and because they have generous grandparents. But, obviously, fewer clothes equals less to wash, fold, and put away.
::Do one load from start to finish every day. Most weekdays, I do one load of laundry from start to finish (wash, dry, fold, put away). I wash the sheets once every week (Fridays), and other items as they get dirty during the week. I don't sort clothes/towels by color unless it's something brand new and very bright or dark. I wash everything together in super loads on warm, and usually do one cold load a week for more delicate items. Because of Ben's allergies/asthma, I do not hang clothes out to dry. I wash diapers every other day. Sometimes when I wash diapers, I don't do a load of clothes that day but other times I do. It depends on our schedule and the situation in the hamper. One benefit to washing clothes daily is that if I miss a day, it's not generally too hard to get caught back up (this could be in part because I only have two children!).
To tell you the truth, that's basically it. Most of the time I'm pretty much caught up on laundry, though there are certainly days (and even weeks) when things get out of hand and Ben is scrounging around for socks.
The Giveaway!
As an added treat, Tropical Traditions has generously offered to give away a 5lb. container of their fabulous powdered laundry detergent to one of y'all!
I am always looking for ways to take toxins out of our home, and using this detergent is one great way to do it. It is free from the dyes, perfumes, fillers and phosphates so often contained in commercially made laundry detergents. The folks at Tropical Traditions sent me a package of this detergent to review, and I have been so happy with the results. Our clothes come out wonderfully clean, and I love knowing they've been washed without toxic chemicals.

My best tip for laundry is to start a load before I go to work in the morning and put it into the dryer when I get home from work. Then, by the time my daughter is asleep, I can fold and put it away.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try the Tropical Traditions laundry powder!
My laundry tip is to stay on top of it! A load a day keeps the laundry at bay!! :)
ReplyDeleteMy system is a lot like yours! I wash colors, whites, delicates and diapers. I don't separate jeans and towels, they get washed all together as colors! I think simplicity is the key to a laundry system!!
We start a load before we go to bed at night and put it in the dryer first thing in the morning.

I have 5 boys so I have a lot of laundry. I usually wash their clothes 2 days (Monday and Thursday) a week. I have 5 baskets that we use for clean clothes only. As I get clean clothes out of the dryer, I fold them and put them in each boys' basket. Then the boys are responsible for putting their own clothes up--even the 2 1/2 year old! I usually wash my husband and my clothes once a week...towels too.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway! I would love to win. I have been buying some organic detergent (Ecos) from Sam's. I like it but would love to try Tropical Traditions.
Right now it's just my husband and I(only for about 2 more months though, soon to have a new addition). I usually sort the laundry and he takes it down stairs washes, dries and brings it back up then I fold it and put it away, it works well for us but we only have about 3 loads a week.

Since I am an empty nester, there just is not enough laundry to do it daily so my deal is every Saturday, do it all! Wash/dry/fold/put away. I can start when I get out of bed and as I relax over morning tea and newspaper, I work my way though and usually have everything done by late morning! I am always interested in safer laundry products and LOVE Tropical Traditions coconut oil!
ReplyDeleteMy best tip for laundry is to first only wash things that are dirty (what I mean is that I hang towels and use them a few times, if my kids only wore a shirt for 2 hrs and didn't get it dirty they can wear it again) and secondly I also do one load a day - start it first thing and make sure it is put away before I go to bed :)

Best Laundry tip huh...I'd say, p.j.'s can be wore several times before they are dirty. Same goes with towels. If I do a load everyday, and stay on top of it, the load is small enough to use less water and short wash cycle and to fit on my clothesline, which saves energy from drying :)
ReplyDeleteWell...I just tell my husband I'm almost out of clean underwear. Sorry. But he does the laundry and this works for us! ;-)

ReplyDeleteWe do laundry every Sun., and we just bought a used washer and dryer; it works fast, so I separate the clothes by whether they are colored or whites, whether they are delicate (I do them first); then I separate the colored laundry into two piles: one for the things that need Clorox II, and the things that need washing second. It takes about 4 or 5 loads, and drying them takes abut 5 hrs.
